it's been a while [Jul. 25th, 2009|06:52 pm]
[music |Opposite of Hallelujah - Jens Lekman]

like, two months, since last i posted, which was right after i got out of the hospital (or hopsital as my nephew would say). healthwise, i've been fine since then. there was an annoying period of wearing a heart monitor, which unfortunately coincided with going to florida with a couple of friends (no going in the water for me). i did get to see the ocean and the space shuttle though, both for the first time. i've had a couple brief recurrences of the arrythmia, none for more than a couple seconds. the longest was probably a couple days ago, when i was rocking out to whitney houston. music in general has the tendency to cause me to dance exuberantly, which occasionally causes palpitations. so i guess music is pretty dangerous.

i can't have caffeine or adderall, although alcohol is okay, which is good news. my doctor changed me over to strattera, which is a non-stimulant ADD med, which proceeded to a) not help me at all and b) make me nauseous. ugh. i finally just stopped taking it recently, because, fuck that shit. i'm going to more productive with no drugs and no nausea than with that shit. i'm really hoping at this point that i can go back to at least small amounts of stimulants later. i have two papers that were due at the end of the school year that i still haven't turned in and it's not looking good. i also have a lab job although fortunately i'm teamed with the highly motivated sgt. smaht, who should be able to keep on top of me in terms of me getting my shit done.

uh other than that it's been a lot lazing about. i feel like my creative juices have been flowing a lot more lately so i've been trying to write more, but it's slightly hard to do that when extremely-overdue-term-paper-guilt is hanging over me. i've been playing this really awesome harvest moon spinoff called 'rune factory'. it's tremendous. tom and jason came down and we marathoned season 2 of 30 rock, which totally converted them, and after they left i marathoned seasons 1 and 3. if you haven't seen 30 rock go watch it now. all 68 episodes.

oh, i got into this linguistics conference in paris (france) in september. so i'll be going to europe! after 5 days or so for the conference i'm going to head to brussels where i will stay at a friend's house. then i'll go to bavaria for oktoberfest where i'll be meeting sgt. smaht and her fiance. between brussels and bavaria i may go other places but i haven't figured that out yet and things are largely dependent on finances. but yay!

yo [May. 12th, 2009|07:21 pm]
i has a new webtrons:

http://home.uchicago.edu/~klecha/

comments/suggestions/etc plz.

i keep coming up with schnazzy ideas for the design that i think are clever, but unfortunately for myself, my personal taste in web design is simplicity: text and geometric figures only, two or three colors.

going down the youtube bunny-hole [Apr. 6th, 2009|12:34 am]
almost as good as the wikipedia one.

first, beyonce's amazing "single ladies".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDEuqzu_pSE

then, the dance number that inspired the choreography.

then, pure awesomeness.

then, a random dance number both performed and choreographed by the guy who choreographed the one above.

then, gwen verdon, the lead dancer in "mexican breakfast" above, in her role as lola in the 1958 film version of "damn yankees", one of my favorite musicals ever.

from which of course follows "damn yankees" in its entirety.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tasxRYlyxvM&feature=PlayList&p=4AD87B4A29D9A8E5&index=0&playnext=1

unfortunately, one has to go to bed sometime.

in other news [Mar. 21st, 2009|06:42 pm]
does anyone know what to do when you get mail that isn't addressed to you? like, the address is right but its not my name, and it looks like a fancy important letter of some kind. i'm sure there's some protocol for what to do in this situation but i don't know what it is.

auuuuuuhhhhhh so relaxed [Mar. 15th, 2009|01:20 am]
wow, i needed that.

spent the evening watching films with cpl. canadian, lcpl. vegan, and ssgt. totally cool dude #2, and wow, i just feel at ease. ahhh.

i think everyone needs to watch vicky cristina barcelona, and then spanglish, in that order. what a lesson in how much a movie can be pretentious fucking bullshit existentialist porn, and a movie could be real actual drama making real actual points, in one sitting. i will take adam sandler in a family drama over woody allen's young beautiful people taking a sex-filled jaunt in spain any fucking day. oh man don't get me fucking started.

and dogfish head's raison d'etre beer, omg so good. yeah, i fucking needed that. whooooosh goes the stress.

early morning thoughts [Feb. 23rd, 2009|09:27 am]
it's taken me like two years, but i'm finally getting around to obsessing over rufus wainwright's latest. c'est magnifique. did you know i speak french?

i went to a party at like two in the morning friday night. i'd like to say i fought the good fight, but in fact i was there for like two minutes, and then bailed. i'm too old for this. and by too old i mean too averse to social interaction. what i am supposed to do with all those people, like, communicate with them? what the fuck is that?

i've been busy lately. really busy. so busy that i have literally nothing else to report, of interest anyway. and also so busy that i can't really spend any more time here, even if i had something to report. so i guess that wraps things up.

Things [Jan. 9th, 2009|12:41 am]
[music |do what you want cause a pirate is free]

  • my current favorite webcomic is neither penny-arcade nor xkcd. it is obviously kate beaton, omg so good.
  • everybody gives me shit because now i wear clothes like a normal adult human being. yes, i know, i used to wear oversized t-shirts. let's all move on.
  • i surrendered my laptop during tea today and when i got it back two windows were open: YouTube: Lazy Town - Cooking by the Book and Wikipedia: Beer Pong. i don't want to brag or anything, but being a linguist is like the most amazing thing ever.
  • i dug a book on lisp out of the trash today. yeah. actually sgt. slavicist did, and then i stole it from him. i don't know what's worse.
  • there was more. i don't recall it.

Excitement!! [Sep. 13th, 2008|10:47 pm]
This is seriously not worthy of excitement, but, this is the fulfillment of a life-long dream, or it least, it could be interpreted that way, as a stretch.

But I'm learning Python (a computer programming language that's apparently really popular with linguists) for the purpose of possibly doing something linguistics related with it some day, but along the way I made Tic Tac Toe.

A made a game! On a computer!! I've been wanting to make video games since I was old enough to understand what fucking bad asses Link and Mega Man were. Okay, so the game doesn't know when you've won, or who's won, it just ends the game after nine turns. Okay, and it lets you overwrite. And you could potentially enter invalid column/row combinations and it would break. But I'm going to assume that if you're playing tic tac toe on a computer you're just not going to be a dick and make an illegal move. Special thanks to [info]daveamongus for betaing.

In conclusion, vacation rules.

More things! [Sep. 11th, 2008|09:00 pm]
I keep pissing the days away as I am, you know, wont to do, but then I remember everyone goes to bed at like 8 o'clock and there are actually many hours of the day in which I can be productive. Not that I am any more productive at night, but the optimistic feeling I have around this time is nice while it lasts.

I forgot to pay my September rent before I left. Well actually I paid it all but about 30 bucks because my rent went up but I paid for September a long-ass time ago when I was still thinking about my old rent. Do you think they'll evict me if I'm like 20 days late on 30 bucks?

[info]phantasmagoracy is like some kind of historical-comedy mining genius. First she notices Drunk History, which is, just like, fucking amazing.

The two with Jack Black are definitely the best. omfg.

Then she links Kate Beaton, who is also utterly amazing, although only historical about 75% of the time, and obscurely Meritime Canadian most of the rest of the time.

I've been reading Daily Kos lately. Which is kinda good I guess because it's a solid waste of time. I'm keenly interested in politics, and in this election especially, but I find I can't discuss/read about/watch tv about politics without becoming insanely and bitterly angry within minutes. Sigh. I wish I had time and means to volunteer. I also wish I could somehow register to vote in Michigan and not Illinois so that vote. You know. Counted.
